Emirates undertakes massive retrofit project, announces $2.9b investement
Emirates has kick-started its plans to upgrade the entire interior cabins of 120 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft – two of the largest commercial aircraft types in service today.
This project officially commences in November and will be managed entirely by Emirates’ engineering team.
The target is to completely retrofit four Emirates aircraft from start to finish every month, continuously for over 2 years. Once the 67 earmarked A380s are refreshed and back in service, 53 777s will undergo their facelift. This will see nearly 4,000 brand new Premium Economy seats installed, 728 First Class suites refurbished and over 5,000 Business Class seats upgraded to a new style and design when the project is complete in April 2025.
In addition, carpets and stairs will be upgraded, and cabin interior panels refreshed with new tones and design motifs including ghaf trees which are native to the UAE. Trials began on an A380 in July, where experienced engineers literally took each cabin apart piece-by-piece and logged every step.
Alongside Emirates’ retrofit, the airline has announced it will invest over USD$2 billion ($2.9 billion) to enhance its inflight customer experience, including a massive programme to retrofit over 120 aircraft with the latest interiors, plus an array of other service improvements across all cabins starting in 2022.
“While others respond to industry pressures with cost cuts, Emirates is flying against the grain and investing to deliver ever better experiences to our customers,” Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airlines said.
“Through the pandemic, we’ve continued to launch new services and initiatives to ensure our customers travel with the assurance and ease, including digital initiatives to improve customer experiences on the ground. Now we’re rolling out a series of intensive programmes to take Emirates’ signature inflight experiences to the next level.”
Starting from August, Emirates will launch new menus with vegan options, an upped champagne and caviar experience for premium cabins, more on-board entertainment options and specialised hospitality training for cabin crew.
