Brisbane Airport sizzles for summer
An extra 480,000 seats just got plonked on the Brisbane route.
Brissy Airport will get busy come these summer holidays, with all four major carriers in Australia committing to boost the services to the Brisbane Domestic market.
Between late October 2015 and March 2016 the additional capacity will be delivered through extra services and the up-gauging of aircraft on certain routes to meet expected demand and a love of hot summer holidays.
Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO and managing director Julieanne Alroe said the significant amount of capacity added during the year’s busiest travel period reinforces the strength of the Queensland market.
“When airlines consider their seasonal scheduling options, it makes good sense to allocate resources where the demand is expected, so if these capacity increases are anything to go by, we expect an exceptionally busy summer with hundreds of thousands of travellers travelling to and through Brisbane, which is great for everyone,” Alroe said.
The additional capacity includes Qantas increasing its Brisbane-Sydney frequency by 23 return services per week of which 10 will be operated with A330-200 aircraft, providing an additional 10,300 seats per week.
QantasLink’s changes include up-gauging some of its Brisbane-Hamilton Island services from a turbo prop to a B717-200 aircraft, creating an additional 400 seats per week and adding 600 seats to the Brisbane-Newcastle route.
Virgin Australia is adding additional services to its Brisbane-Perth and Brisbane-Sydney routes creating an additional 1050 and 1760 weekly seats respectively, while also up-gauging its Brisbane-Canberra service to a larger B737-800 aircraft, resulting in an additional 600 seats per week.
Jetstar has committed 50,000 extra seats between Brisbane and Sydney over the summer, while adding an additional 10,000 seats between Brisbane and Cairns. Another 10,000 seats are set to be added on a number of other routes.
Tigerair has committed 74,000 more seats, spread over the five routes it operates to/from Brisbane, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns and Darwin.
