Tiger kicks off Sydney-Cairns flights

Tiger kicks off Sydney-Cairns flights
By admin

Tiger Australia's inaugural service from Sydney to Cairns touched down this morning, with local tourism hopeful it will help stimulate the vital Sydney market.

The four times weekly service is set to rise to daily in June adding up to 2,520 weekly seats to Cairns.

Tiger head of communications, Vanessa Regan, told Travel Today that the first return service had "just a handful" of empty seats and reported encouraging early sales.

"Tiger's new services to Cairns further increase Tiger's presence in Queensland, an ever popular state for our customers to visit, particularly as we head into the winter season when many Sydneysiders and Victorians are seeking an affordable escape to sunny Queensland," she said.

In addition, Regan predicted the onset of the winter football season would drive Queenslanders to Sydney and Melbourne using the low fares carrier.

Meanwhile, Cairns Airport general manager aeronautical development and marketing, Janice Antonson, welcomed the new service, reporting success for Tiger's Melbourne-Cairns service which recommenced in April 2012.

The Sydney service will help stimulate the key NSW market, according to Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive officer Rob Giason.

"Increasing airline capacity is the only way the Cairns region can increase visitors from markets like Sydney because people fly rather than drive those distances," he said.

Next week, Tiger will launch two new services to Alice Springs from both Sydney and Melbourne.
