Qantas will expand its codeshare agreement with China Eastern Airlines into additional Chinese cities as it seeks to cater to growing demand from the business market.

From May 1, Qantas will codeshare on China Eastern daily services between Melbourne and Shanghai in addition to its Sydney-Nanjing-Beijing three times weekly services. It will also begin codesharing on China Eastern's domestic Shanghai-Nanjing services.

The move takes Qantas' tally of weekly services between Australia and China to 17, with the carrier connecting onwards via Shanghai to 11 domestic destinations.

Qantas International manager China, Andrew Hogg, said the increased access to major cities in China forms part of the airline's Asian expansion strategy, unveiled in February.

"We are building on our strong relationship with China Eastern to support growing corporate travel and tourism between Australia and China," he said.

"The new codeshare agreements provide Qantas customers with a daily, non-stop connection from Melbourne to the global business hub of Shanghai, alongside Qantas' established Sydney-Shanghai flights."

The two carriers first began their codeshare arrangement in 2008, with a codeshare already in place on China Eastern services between Singapore and Shanghai.

They also recently collaborated on the Jetstar Hong Kong joint venture.
