Tasmania receives major tourism boost

Tasmania’s “island heritage” will be promoted alongside Australian icons the Great Barrier Reef and the Red Centre as it becomes the 15th National Landscape.

The island’s coastline, forests and rivers will be showcased to the world through the program which is a partnership between Tourism Australia and Parks Australia.

Speaking at the announcement, tourism minister Martin Ferguson highlighted Tasmania’s reputation as an area of “natural beauty, unique wildlife and world-class tourism experiences”.

“Increased exposure as a National Landscape will assist the island in continuing to attract domestic and international visitors,” he said.

Environment minister Tony Burke identified nature as the “primary driver” for visitors to Australia.

“The creation of these 15 iconic National Landscapes is central in assisting international travellers to explore our vast and fascinating country and support a strong tourism sector.”

Meanwhile, the Tourism and Transport Forum claimed the program would ensure a “co-ordinated approach” between government and the Tasmanian tourism industry.

“It will create even greater awareness among international visitors, which can help drive export earnings as well as fund future investment in conservation,” chief executive John Lee said.
