Malaysia Airlines foreign leadership
Malaysia Airlines are said to be considering giving a foreigner the top seat as new chief executive officer, a first for the ailing national carrier.
The foreign candidate is, according to news reports, one of three shortlisted and is someone within the airline industry and will be in charge of restructuring the company to show results within 5 years.
The move is said to send a signal to stakeholders that the Government is keen to explore every possibility to put MAS back on track amid heavy competition.
“Apart from the CEO, MAS will also hire another five or six key personnel who are knowledgeable in specific areas of the industry to cut costs,” a source told eturbo news.
“For instance, in the area of engineering, which is a major cost centre, a person will be hired to guide the committee on how to rationalise cost without impacting services.”
Last month, the airline revealed a restructuring plan that included having assets being moved to a new company by mid-next year. The plan also involved job cuts of 6,000 from its current staff of 20,000, and would see MAS being privatised by the airline’s major shareholder, Khazanah Nasional.
A reason attributed to the previous failed airline restructuring plans was that a non-airline person had been put in charge to drive operations.
“Now the committee in charge of the restructuring is making sure every key post is handled by a person from the industry. If there is no expertise locally, then foreigners will be hired,” a source told etn.
The report stated the new ceo would resume the roll in September 2015.
