30 feared dead in Italian ski hotel avalanche

Some 30 guests staying at a luxury Italian ski hotel buried by an avalanche are feared dead.

Rescue workers have reported no signs of life at the site, according to the ABC, with the risk of more avalanches slowing the search. Two people were able to escape the devastation, but it took hours for responders to reach the scene on skis.

The avalanche hit Hotel Rigopiano tucked away in the mountains of the Gran Sasso range yesterday. The hotel, in the Abruzzo region, is some 45 km’s from the coastal city of Pescara, at an altitude of about 1,200 metres.

The avalanche was believed to have been triggered after four earthquakes hit the region. It was reported tremors were felt in Rome with the city’s metro temporarily evacuated and closed.
