Fiji Tourism debuts on BeReal

Fiji has become the first country in the world to hold a national social media account on new-age social media platform BeReal.

The island nation’s tourism board has joined the platform to provide content that strives to be more meaningful and unfiltered. BeReal asks users to share a simultaneous snap using a smartphone’s front and back camera where users are unable to edit or filter the images, earning it the title of the most authentic social media platform.

Meaningful connections and personalised experiences are particularly becoming more resonant amongst millennials and Gen Zers with data.ai reporting 55 per cent of the app’s users are in the 16-24 age group and 43 per cent are in the 25-44 age group.

Working with Fijian locals, the official Tourism Fiji BeReal account will upload one unedited post each day. The BeReal account will showcase Fijian locals and the places that Fiji has to offer.

Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, said: “Beyond its stunning vistas, Fiji is also known for its people who radiate happiness.

“The platform gives us the opportunity to showcase those responsible for Fiji’s iconic ‘bula spirit’, the local desire to be kind and generous to everyone they meet.

“Our BeReal followers will be able to get a glimpse into the genuine beauty of Fiji and our people.”

Robert Thompson, Tourism Fiji’s regional director Australia, added: “We’ve watched the rise of BeReal and felt its ethos perfectly aligned with Fiji’s. Both are authentic, genuine, and above all, real. BeReal will give us an opportunity to show people around the world that Fiji is truly paradise on earth, and it requires no filter.”

BeReal is the latest social media platform gaining rapid popularity around the globe and is currently the most downloaded app in Australia. The app had the number one spot in the US Apple App Store charts in July 2022, dethroning TikTok. The app has been downloaded 28 million times with 22 million active daily users globally.
