COOKIEGATE: United freaks out flying community by temporarily axing cult cookie

Istanbul, Turkey - October 31, 2014: Package and pieces of Lotus Biscoff Original Caramelised Biscuit. Lotus Bakeries is a Belgian company initially specialized the biscuits

United Airlines recently caused quite the stir among the frequent flyer community last week by changing up the biscuit selection on its inflight offering.

But it wasn’t just any biscuit the airline axed – it was Lotus’ Biscoff cookies.

And it caused such as stir that the carrier has since had to publically reassure its customers that the cult classic cookies would be returning to its menus soon.

For the uninitiated, Biscoff cookies are a lightly spiced shortbread-like concoction akin to Belgian speculoos biscuits. And they’re bloody delicious.

The airline announced the little slices of sugary gold would be temporarily replaced by Oreo Thins, the classic Oreo’s ugly cousin. But they forgot to mention the replacement would be temporary in their initial announcement, causing Twitter to lose its absolute mind.

Delta Airlines took the opportunity to reassure its customers it would still be serving the delicious treat, tweeting a photo of their specially branded Biscoffs with the caption “Yep, still got ’em”.

Picking up on the outrage that was spreading like wildfire in the Twitterverse, United tweeted at Eater, who initially reported the scandal reassuring its customers, restoring order to the world.

“@eater, you’re one smart cookie. Internet, we won’t go baking your heart. We have an ongoing rotation of snacks… so here’s how the cookie crumbles for this round: OREO Thins = on board March 1 ? Biscoff = comes back May 1 ? Stroopwafel = here always ?,” the airline said.
