Paris to phase out iconic paper metro tickets

Say goodbye to finding Paris metro tickets in every jean and jacket pocket weeks after returning home.

The city of lights is phasing out those tiny paper metro tickets after 120 years to introduce something more akin to London’s Oyster Card and Sydney’s Opal.

Last week the city launched Navigo Easy, a reusable plastic card that will replace single-use tickets.

According to Lonely Planet, the card will cost €2 ($3.30 AUD) and can be topped up at counters and machines at stations and throughout the city.

The new card, which is aimed at tourists, will be available for the Paris Metro, OrlyBus and RoissyBuss but will eventually be rolled out to cover the whole gamut of public transport in the Île-de-France region.

Unlike the Navigo Decouvert, the city’s multi-use seven-day pass card, the Navigo Easy doesn’t require photo ID to purchase.

Fares will stay at €1.90 ($3.10 AUD) for a single trip and €14.90 ($24.40) for ten trips.

The little white tickets, which have been in use since the Paris Metro opened in 1900 will no longer be available after the summer of 2020.
