American banker killed hotel staff member “in self-defence” while on holiday with children
A UBS banker has been left “traumatised” after reportedly killing a staff member at a Caribbean hotel to protect the lives of his young daughters and himself.
After being taken into custody for manslaughter mid-April, financial adviser Gavin Scott Hapgood said he killed a staff member at his hotel room in Anguilla “in self-defence” after being “attacked without warning”, according to Page Six.
The assailant, who was reportedly a maintenance worker at the hotel, arrived at Hapgood’s room unannounced, armed and demanding money. Hapgood’s two young daughters were reportedly in the room at the time of the alleged killing.
The event occurred on 13 April at an undisclosed five-star hotel in the Brittish Overseas Territory of Anguilla, located in the Eastern Caribbean.
“Neither invited nor expected, the worker showed up unannounced in uniform at the hotel room, claiming he was there to fix a broken sink before carrying out his sudden, violent attack on the family,” a spokesperson for Hapgood, from crisis communications firm Red Banyan, told Page Six.
“A dedicated father and husband and respected member of his community, Scott and the members of his family have been traumatised by the assault they survived and are thankful to be alive.”
Hapgood was released on $74,000 bail and is believed to be back home in the United States at Darien, Connecticut.
Locals have reportedly said that Hapgood, as a “wealthy tourist”, was given special treatment and that he will not return for trial.
Hapgood’s lawyer has said his client has every intention to return to Anguilla to clear his name.
