Embarrassing tourist gaff highlights the need for agents

A tourist has been urged to contact a travel agent after asking advice on how to drive from Sydney to New Zealand.

The traveller, who said they were travelling from India, posted to TripAdvisor last week under the heading “Drive from Sydney to New Zealand in December… Please reply”.

In the post, the traveller said they wanted to drive from Sydney to Auckland, down to Queenstown before flying back to India.

They also asked if they would need different visas travelling between the two countries.

The post has since been deleted by TripAdvisor at the request of the user, but the NZ Herald managed to publish some of the more creative responses before they were taken down.

“You cannot drive between Sydney and Auckland – you’ll get wet crossing the Tasman Sea.” the commenter pointed out.

Another pointed the traveller in the direction of a water car website, “Hi. You’ll need one of these and a lot of luck.”

And others pointed out the glaringly obvious – if you didn’t know that there was a large body of water between Australia and New Zealand then perhaps its time to consult a professional.

“I suggest you consult a travel agent to arrange your flights, bookings and rental cars. You cannot drive the Tasman Sea between Australia and [New Zealand].” a commenter said.

“Please don’t get me wrong, but since you still seem to think you can drive from Sydney to Auckland, I suggest you visit a travel agent and have them help you plan your trip,” said another.

“Or if you are set on doing this yourself, look at a map and read some travel guides.”
