Cycle along a World Heritage listed Canal in Southern France in 2019
UTracks, the active Europe specialist has launched a new cycling itinerary through Southern France for 2019, following the Canal du Midi from Toulouse to Sète.
The Canal du Midi was built in the 17th Century by Frenchmen Pierre Paul Riquet, who overcame great obstacles to connect the Mediterranean with the Atlantic through the Garonne Canal. It was considered to be one of the greatest construction works of the 17th Century. The entire waterway is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Stretching 240km from Toulouse to Sète, the canal travels through a landscape rich in architectural and cultural treasures including Carcassonne, one of Europe’s most impressive medieval cities.
One of the best way to appreciate all facets of the Canal du Midi, is at your own pace, on a self-guided cycling itinerary. And for those wanting to take the trip down a further notch, there’s the option to upgrade to an electric bike. E-bikes are taking Europe by storm making opening up cycling based itineraries to those who may not have considered them before.
