Woman left with second-degree burns after Qantas flight

There is nothing more devastating than missing out on a nice cup of tea.

Unless the reason you’re missing out is because somebody has spilt it all over your legs leaving you with second-degree burns.

Possibly the only thing that could make it suck more is if this happened midflight.

A woman on her way to work at the Commonwealth Games told the ABC this is exactly what happened to her.

The woman, known only as Katrina because she didn’t want her surname published, told ABC Radio Perth she was on her way to the Gold Coast from Perth on the 18th of March when a flight attendant accidentally spilt boiling water on her legs while passing her a cup of tea.

“I was in shock and a lot of pain,” Katrina told the ABC.

“I was standing up to try to dry it, but she [the flight attendant] had already moved on to the next row of people and I got no medical assistance, no help throughout the entire flight.”

When she later mentioned the burns to the flight attendant, Katrina said she was ignored.

“She went ‘oh’, and that was all she said.”

“I kept trying to tell the flight attendants what had happened, but again they didn’t do anything [to help me] on the flight.”

After arriving at the Gold Coast, Katrina went to hospital where she was told the burn would not have been as severe if she received medical attention immediately.

Katrina said she sent letters to Qantas confirming she had second-degree burns and the way she was treated on the flight.

She told the ABC it took 11 days for Qantas to respond to her complaint, but she is still unhappy with their response, saying she wants an apology and her medical expenses paid for.

“Qantas really needs to update its procedures and what they are doing on the plane so it doesn’t happen again,” she said.

ABC reports Qantas has confirmed the incident was not logged but a staff member had been in contact with Katrina and the incident is still under investigation.
