Study: Are Aussie travellers more high maintenance than Mariah Carey?
If you have ever refused to stay in a budget hostel because it doesn’t meet your vacation standards, then you are surprisingly more high maintenance than A-list diva Mariah Carey.
Swapping her $45,000-a-month mansion for a room in the Casa Gracia, where prices start from just $55 a night, Mariah embraced a Barcelona hostel as a part of budget accommodation chain Hostelworld’s latest global campaign.
Ordering dog chauffeurs and demanding 20 white kittens and 100 doves is typical Mariah style, but it seems times are changing.
The Hostelworld campaign, devised by London-based creative agency, Lucky Generals, shows Mariah’s anger at being booked into a hostel swiftly turned on its head as she and her entourage are taken on a tour showcasing the hostel’s modern features.

And if Mariah can dance on the table of a hostel cocktail bar with gold sequins and white doves then we expect to do exactly that next time we travel.
In an age where the internet exists and TripAdvisor won’t let you get away with anything, hostels have seriously picked up their game.
So long are the infamous bed-bug ridden, ratty, no Wi-Fi rooms and hello is true value for money where hostels are actually prioritising their appearance and customer experience.
Which is lucky because it turns out Aussie travellers have not just some, but quite a few diva tendencies that would even put Mariah to shame.
New research released yesterday by Hostelworld revealed that half of Aussies recognise that they have diva traits and more than a third (41 per cent) have someone in their group of friends specifically known as ‘the diva’.
According to the results of the latest survey of 1,500 Australian holidaymakers and travellers, us Aussies are a pretty demanding bunch.
Well over two-thirds of Aussies (72 per cent) require a private bathroom when travelling and almost a quarter (24 per cent) would refuse to stay in accommodation if they saw evidence of a dirty cup in the sink.
The Northern Territory is home to the biggest divas, with 60 per cent of respondents saying they bring their own pillow, compared to an average of 37 per cent from the other states.
And we’re just quietly over here getting friends to sit on our suitcases and sacrificing underwear to zip it up, while some are magically fitting pillows in their bags.
But it doesn’t stop there, 93 per cent of respondents from the Northern Territory consider having their own bathroom a necessity, and one in four perceive face masks as an essential travel item compared to one in seven in most states.
As for other holiday essentials, 60 per cent of Aussie women deem cleanser as essential, followed by hand sanitizer (52 per cent), big sunglasses (46 per cent) and anti-bacterial wipes (45 per cent).
And when it comes to food the fuss doesn’t end.
More than half of respondents (52 per cent) claim they eat the millennials’ favourite, avocados, on holidays and 36 per cent would opt for non-dairy milk alternatives.
At least we’re being hygienic and healthy right?
While we love being compared to Mariah, perhaps hand sanitiser and avocados are much better diva priorities than white doves and dog chauffeurs.
