Firefighter rescues woman from active volcano
A holidaying firefighter has rescued a woman after she fell into the crater of an active volcano.
If that’s not another reason to live firefighters, we don’t know what is.
The 33-year-old Birmingham based fiery, John Conway, was part of a group climbing Mount Batur in Bali to watch the sunrise when a 23-year-old woman, also from the West Midlands, fell 40 meters from a viewing platform.
Conway spent six hours caring for the woman and helped carry her 1.7 kilometers down the volcano.
Despite only having wet wipes, tissues and tape at his disposal, Conway spent 30 minutes stemming the woman’s bleeding before he was joined by nurse Dorina Agache from Dublin.
“That was a massive relief,” Conway said.
“We both bounced off each other, making sure she stayed conscious and her condition didn’t worsen for the next six to seven hours,”
“She was clearly in a very bad way. She was bleeding a lot and turning blue.”
Fellow travellers helped out by providing clothes to keep the woman warm and forming a human chain to lift her out of the crater with a stretcher Conway made from bits of wood.

Conway and Agache took the woman to the hospital where she was treated for a fractured spine, fractured ribs and a serious head injury.
“When we were carrying her down the mountainside, to stop her drifting unconscious, I kept saying to her: ‘Repeat after me – my name’s John, I’m 33 and I’m a firefighter from Birmingham’” Conway told Birmingham Mail.
“When I spoke to her the next day, the first thing she said to me was ‘Is that John, the 33-year-old firefighter from Birmingham?”
Conway has since returned home but is still in daily contact with the woman who is recovering in hospital and is expected to fly home next week.
