Midweek Interview with The Anam GM Herbert Laubichler-Pichler

This week we got up close and personal with The Anam GM Herbert Laubichler-Pichler, until he requested we sit further away.

The challenge for the industry is…

It all depends on what kind of operation you run. Your size and location both have huge impacts. Independent and branded hotels face different challenges. Resorts and city hotels are two completely different kettles of fish.

I believe the only common challenge is that many people perceive what we do as something anyone can do. Guests often compare what they do in their home for family and friends and judge the hotel industry by it.

After all, everyone can arrange an airport pick-up, serve a welcome drink, make beds and coffee, press a fresh orange juice, decorate a table, smile and be friendly.

However, many forget that we do this for a living and not just once in a while for a member of the family or a friend. We operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. So it all comes down to consistency and well-trained staff who love what they’re doing.

The things I like about my job…

Happy guests and happy staff

And the frustrations are …

Unhappy guests and unhappy staff

If I didn’t work in travel I would be…

An architect or a teacher

Favourite airline?

My proudest moment was…

The birth of my first daughter Jessica

The naughtiest thing I ever did was…

Crashing a party at The Dorchester in London with some friends, pretending to be the manager of the band that was supposed to perform for this party

I try to relax by…

Getting a massage and listening to music

The last time I feared for my life was…

In a private plane that took off in a blizzard from Salzburg to Dusseldorf many years ago.

If I can, I always try to avoid…

Getting angry over reasons that are a fact of life

I really wish I had…

Good health for many years to come

The best advice I’ve ever received was…

Life is more successful when you plan it

I don’t understand why people…

Don’t listen

My greatest weakness is…

My impatience

And my greatest strength is…

My enthusiasm for what I do

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would…

Still do what I do now

If I was prime minister I would…

Tell the truth to everyone. Even if it doesn’t help me get re-elected!

If I could be someone else for one day I would be a…

F1 Driver

I’ve always wanted to travel to…

South America
