Virgin unveils details of Aussie route to HKG

Virgin Australia’s new flight launch between Australia and Honk Kong has kicked off!

Last month Virgin Australia announced their new direct services between Australia and the Hong Kong following an ACC interim approval of alliance agreement with HNA Aviation, Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express.

Virgin Australia have revealed that Melbourne will be the Australian city servicing direct flights to and from Hong Kong, with flights going on sale from tomorrow, 22 March 2017.

Commencing from the 5 July 2017, Virgin Australia will operate five return services per week between the two cities, using dual aisle Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Services will operate Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday and Saturday.

Virgin Australia’s proposed alliance with HNA Aviation and Hong Kong Airlines will enable customers to connect through Hong Kong to 13 destinations in mainland China. It will also allow guests from Hainan Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Capital Airlines and Tianjin Airlines to connect onto Virgin Australia’s expansive domestic and trans-Tasman network.

The Virgin Australia flights are on sale subject to obtaining final regulatory approval from the ACCC.

“We are delighted to have two of Australia’s key carriers, Virgin Australia and Qantas, flying into Hong Kong, along with Hong Kong’s flagship carrier Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines. A fourth major airline is a huge boost for the region and we hope to see positive arrival results off the back of it”, said Hong Kong Tourism Board Regional Director, Andrew Clark.

“Virgin Australia’s launch is incredibly significant for Hong Kong as interest and capacity to China increases. Hong Kong is still a major player on the stopover route and an ideal stepping stone into China, particularly for first time travellers.”

In 2016, Hong Kong welcomed the successful launch of Hong Kong Airlines out of the Gold Coast, via Cairns to Hong Kong in February and the introduction of double daily flights from Qantas between April and October last year.

Virgin Australia’s Airbus A330-200 fleet features the airline’s award-winning Business Class suites, ‘The Business’, 255 economy seats in a 2-4-2 configuration and will be operated by the World’s Best Cabin Crew 2016.

Velocity Frequent Flyer members will be able to earn Velocity Points and Status Credits on these flights, while details of reciprocal frequent flyer benefits and lounge access will be announced at a later date together with codeshare arrangements.
