Five best cruise lines for hungry holiday-makers
“People will travel anywhere for good food,” claims Dutch chef, Rene Redzepi.
Well, what if you could travel anywhere with good food?
Fine dining can perfect any cruise holiday, and with the introduction of celebrity chefs to eleven major cruise lines, dining on the high seas has never tasted better.
So if you’ve got a big appetite and a hunger for wanderlust on the water, look no further.
Australian online cruise retailer and travel agent, CruiseAway, has put together the top five cruise lines and their number one ships serving the best food on the seven seas.
1. Holland America Line ft. Nieuw Amsterdam
From formal dining in the Manhattan hall, to casual deep dish from the late night pizza joint, the Nieuw Amsterdam offers an award-winning selection of dining options to satisfy the fussiest of eaters.
Sophisticated traditional dining with a modern twist is available in the two-tiered Manhattan Dining hall, while a more casual option is Lido Restaurant serving delicious modern cuisine.
“The highlight of this ship is the exotic Tamarind Asian Restaurant where the most exquisite cuisine from Japan, China and Southeast Asia satisfy the palettes of every passenger in the restaurant,” explains CruisAway consultant, Emma Bennett.
For more information about cruising onboard one of these fine ships, go to: www.cruiseaway.com.au.
2. Oceania Cruises ft. Oceania Rivera
Throughout their 13 years of service at sea, one of Oceania Cruises’ top priorities has always been in the kitchen.
A night of sophisticated and elegant dining can be enjoyed in the Grand Dining Hall, or the finest steaks and seafood at Polo Grill. For a taste of Italy, the Toscana restaurant is the place.
Out of their fleet, Oceania Riviera and Marina stand out as they offer two additional dining venues: an Asian-themed “Red Ginger” and a French bistro, “Jacques” named after the head chef, Jacques Pepin.
For casual options, an alfresco meal served on at the Terrace Café is delicious, as is a burger and milkshake poolside at Waves Grill.

3. Crystal Cruises ft. Serenity
This Japanese owned cruise line provides fine dining, specialising in great food as well as luxurious service.
A classic but modern way of traditional dining is served in the Crystal Dining Room. As one of the first to introduce alternative specialty restaurants, Crystal caters for everyone’s taste buds. Excellent Japanese cuisine is served at the Silk Road restaurant, courtesy of MasterChef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa. The Prego restaurant offers tasty Italian food and wine.
Casual dining is provided in a number on board. For example, the Lido Café serves a wide choice of modern foods in a buffet style, as well as the Tastes Restaurant, where the prime burgers can be found

4. Norwegian Cruise Line ft. Norwegian Epic
With over a dozen restaurants, there is no shortage for choice of food on board, even for the fussiest of eaters.
“Along with the elegant, traditional dining in the Manhattan Dining Room, catered by Norwegian Epic celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian, live band plays, allowing guests to dance the night away on the large dance floor,” says CruiseAway’s Emma Bennett.
There are also numerous complimentary casual dining options, including Taste and Savor, both restaurants carrying casual menus. The Garden café is a buffet style dining option, with the friendly service and tasty international cuisine. “The extremely popular O’Sheehans offers outstanding bar food,” adds Ms. Bennett.

5. Celebrity Cruises ft. Celebrity Equinox
Back in 2013, Celebrity raised the bar of dining at sea, and continues to do so with their award winning cuisine and world class wine collection.
They offer modern twist on traditional dining with a superb menu which can be found in the two tiered main dining room. Celebrity serve excellent casual food options in several restaurants on board, as well as buffet styled dining options.
Specialty restaurants add to the fabulous range of mouthwatering cuisines found on board. The taste of Italy is served in the Tuscan Grill, or French food in Murano, as well as the Orient at Silk Harvest.
