Australia’s big love affair with a little island

Australia’s big love affair with a little island

It’s no secret that Australians love New Caledonia.

Just two hours from Brisbane, three from Sydney and under four from Melbourne, it’s close, relatively inexpensive to get to, and with beautiful weather and friendly people – what’s not to like?

While figures released off the back of New Caledonia Tourism’s ‘Hello Neighbour’ campaign that reveal Australians as its top visitors will shock no one, it might surprise you just how long the average Aussie stays on this little island.

However, don’t let the island’s tiny stature mislead you – it’s actually a destination jam-packed with holiday action.

Stats suggest that the average Australian tourist spends a not exactly brief 10.5 nights in New Caledonia, with many choosing to venture beyond Noumea explore the island’s lesser-known, more remote outer regions.

New Caledonia boasts a winning combination of soft adventure, mouth-watering cuisine, luxury accommodation, a vibrant culture and natural wonders like the UNESCO World Heritage lagoon.

New Caledonia

Statistics released by the New Caledonian Bureau of Statistics and Economic Surveys revealed that Australian visitors have a 27.9 per cent share over France, Japan and New Zealand.

“New Caledonia is going from strength to strength and we are on track to smash the records this year,” said New Caledonia Tourism’s sales and marketing director.

And as a diverse and distinctive destination a stone’s throw from Australian shores, the Aussie obsession with New Caledonia’s exotic intrigue isn’t fading any time soon.
