The 10 least searched cities for Aussies…
The Eiffel Tower, Machu Picchu, Las Vegas – we get it; sometimes it pays to follow the beaten track.
But what about that thrill of announcing your next holiday is somewhere slightly less visited, and the buzz you get from exploring somewhere new?
There are stacks of spots that Aussies don’t know about, and thanks to Skyscanner, we can tell you where those special places are.
If you’re seeking some strange, and want to leap off that highway and follow the little forest path, we’ve got you covered.
These are the 10 least searched cities that happen to make awesome holiday hangouts (and the search numbers to prove it!).
1. Akrotiri, Greece: 1 search from Australia in the past year
Located on the the southwestern side of Santorini, Akrotiri isn’t as touristy as the photos you might find on Instagram or in your social circle’s Facebook albums.
It is, in fact, pretty spectacular, with unbridled views of the caldera. It is also usually recommended as a day-trip because it’s home to the ancient settlement of Akrotiri, which is located next the modern Akrotiri village.
2. Walla Walla, USA: 5 searches
Located in the southeast corner of the Washington state, Walla Walla is a hop and a skip away from Seattle, Portland and Boise, making it a great road trip destination for anybody who wants to explore small towns in America.
Walla Walla unites outdoor sporting activities, such as golfing, with an incredible restaurant scene alongside picturesque wineries to make your adventure a memorable one.
3. Hammerfest, Norway: 27 searches
Hammerfest, touted as the northernmost town in the world, will see you venturing on scenic hikes, checking out fishing villages and tasting the fresh fishies, and even going on arctic expeditions on the mountain Salen in Hammerfest.
If you enjoy fishing, be sure to head to Sørøya Gjestestue where you can rent a boat and go sea fishing, hire snowmobiles, quad bikes or lavvo (traditional Sami tent); letting you design the holiday experience you’ll never forget.
4. Tortola, British Virgin Islands: 82 searches
Tortola is the largest, and most populated of the British Virgin Islands.
Tortola is home to beaches you’ve only seen on postcards and on TV, and where there’s beautiful beaches and stunning waters, you can be sure a host of sea sports is available, not to mention the fresh seafood. Yum!
5. Brunswick, Georgia: 99 searches
Brunswick, Georgia is not only home to charming nineteenth century Victorian-style homes, century old grand oaks, endless golden marshes, but it is also touted as world shrimp capital and is the home of Brunswick stew.
Walk around the old town, down to the marina and watch shrimpers unload at the docks along Bay Street before sampling the fresh catch in one of the local restaurants.
6. Puerto Montt, Chile: 161 searches
The locals may have a hundred names for their town, but chances are you’d pass by Puerto Montt on the way to somewhere more well known in Southern Chile.
The town has its own charm, with gorgeous cathedrals and bustling street markets, but what you might not know is that it is one of the largest salmon aquaculture industries in the world. Time to load up on the Omega 3s!
7. Thunder Bay, Canada: 232 searches
If the great outdoors excite you and you’re not scared off by wolves crossing your path while you’re cycling, Thunder Bay should be on your bucket list. Here you’ll find truly everything, from snow sports and fishing to hiking and overnight camping.
8. Naypyidaw, Myanmar: 492 searches
While Myanmar may be one of the hottest places to visit in Asia, not all of the cities are well-travelled by tourists. Naypyidaw was built from scratch in the middle of rice paddies and sugar-cane fields, and was unveiled in 2005 as Burma’s new capital by the then-military regime.
Apparently, the new capital is rumoured to have cost up to $4 billion to construct. It’s full of brand new infrastructure and wide highways for a city of millions. Only problem is there’s almost no one here using it.
9. Moorea, French Polynesia: 653 searches
Considering it’s a heart-shaped island, it’s no surprise that Moorea is one of the top honeymoon destinations in Tahiti, second only to Bora Bora.
The landscape is vast, with eight mountains and lots of hiking trails, heaps of water and sports activities and you can even enjoy nature with some whale watching or hanging out at their dolphin sanctuary. Or, you can just kick back and get a Moorean tan.
10. Mombasa, Kenya: 1004 searches
Mombasa, the main tourist attraction in Kenya, manages to amalgamate a diverse dining scene, a bustling city and beaches you’d spend a lot of time photographing.
Music is one of the main features of Mombasa’s culture, and you can find multiple avenues to experience diverse musical entertainment with styles of music native to Mombasa, and more international styles like hip hop and reggae.
