Airline to weigh passengers

Airline to weigh passengers

Excess baggage has been given a whole new meaning with this airline.

You may reconsider stuffing your face with Krispy Kreme donuts before boarding this flight.

Uzbekistan Airways announced it will require customers to go through “pre-flight weighing” to determine the average weight of passengers with hand luggage.

The airline cited IATA rules as the basis of the new measures, saying airlines are “obliged” to carry out “regular procedures” of pre-flight passenger weighing to ensure “flight safety”.

According to a statement released by the airline, passengers will be required to stand on a “special weighing machine” near departure gates.

“The weighing record will only contain the corresponding passenger category (i.e. male/ female/ children). As for the rest, the full confidentiality of results is guaranteed,” Uzbekistan Airways stated.

It is unclear whether overweight passengers will face extra charges or potentially, be refused boarding the aircraft.

The move comes after Samoa Air in 2013 said it would start to charge passengers based on their weight.
