Today marks one year until the Olympic Games start in Rio, and to celebrate we’re taking a visual tour though Brazil.

With all the festivities in store, tourism is set to skyrocket, and soon the country will be brimming with even more travellers than usual.

To keep up with demand, Intrepid created a new trip that was launched this year in Northern Brazil.

Kicking off in in Rio, it forgoes the well-worn path through the southern beaches and Sao Paulo, instead heading north to Salvador and onwards to places where you won’t find western tourists.

Intrepid recently sent photographer Lucy Piper to Brazil to capture these places, and the following feast for the eyes is the perfect way to get excited about the Olympics, and the various places you can travel before or after the games to escape the rowdy crowds.

Salvador

Known as the happiest city in Brazil, this place is an ancient town full of stories, and is a World Heritage Listed site.

Chapada Diamantina National Park

West of Salvador, this is a beautiful area with ample hiking tracks, caves, waterfalls and natural swimming holes. It was once abundant with diamonds.

Lencois

The base for Chapada, it’s a colourful little town with cobbled streets and the wealth from diamond mining shows.
