Walking the footsteps of Mandela

Walking the footsteps of Mandela

Nat Geo photojournalist Pablo Corral Vega recently ventured to South Africa to trace the footsteps of heroic global hero, Nelson Mandela.

National Geographic Channel and South Africa Tourism hitched wagons to create a commissioned 90” vignette, capturing Vega’s journey.

The campaign will launch in April 2015 on Nat Geo Channel, airing in South African Tourisms key markets, with an estimated 300 million tuning in. The video is part of the Nat Geo Channel ‘Through the Lens’ series.

Photojournalist Vega’s project began in the Eastern Cape in Qunu, where Mandela spent his early childhood. Vega’s aim is to understand more about Mandela’s life, and his long journey from 27 year prisoner to South African President.

“Mandela opened up our beautiful country, once a pariah state, to the rest of the world and his name alone has attracted millions of tourists wanting to walk in his footsteps to South Africa every year,” South African Tourism chief executive officer Thulani Nzima said.

“Through this vignette, we know that many people around the world will be encouraged and inspired to come to South Africa to experience Mandela’s life journey, our rich history and the warm welcome of our people.”
