Qantas crew turns nose up at noisy hotel

Qantas are looking into alternative accommodation for crew in Los Angeles after receiving complaints from flight attendants and pilots who say their current hotel is too noisy.

The move to the Anaheim Hilton, situated closer to LAX than its previous crew accommodation at Costa Mesa, is causing strife for guests as the hotel neighbours the LA convention centre, which regularly hosts large-scale events including music festivals and concerts. It is also situated close to Disneyland and other theme parks.

NewsCorp reports Flight Attendants Association of Australia National Industrial Officer has been “inundated with complaints from members and fear if the situation continues flights may be cancelled”.

A Qantas spokesperson confirmed to Travel Weekly the airline is aware of crew concerns and is in talks to find alternative occasional accommodation in LA.

“We are talking to the management of the hotel so they can help resolve our concerns, including providing more notice when major events are planned at the neighbouring convention centre,” the spokesperson told Travel Weekly.

While some news reports claim the airline moved its crew from Costa Mesa to the Anaheim Hilton one year ago as part of the airlines’ $2 billion cost cutting strategy, the airline has not revealed what savings, if any, are being made from the hotel change.

“If crews are not adequately rested, they are required to report unfit for duty,” the Flight Attendants Association of Australia National Industrial officer, Steven Reed told NewsCorp.

“That hasn’t happened yet but if there’s not a move, that could be the situation.”

The paper reports Reed as saying “Qantas would have to spend a “few more dollars” to ensure flight crews were well rested.”

“By the time you get to the hotel you want to go for a walk and then get some rest, not face a rock band playing in the foyer and kids running up and down the halls,” Reed said, as per the report.

According to Reed, hotel security guards are being dispatched to minimise disruption on floors where crew are accommodated, and a meeting has been set up with Qantas next week to address the unions’ concerns.
