After all that, Asians prefer to holiday in Asia
By admin

The majority of Asians prefer to holiday on their own continent, a new study by ITB reveals.

ITB’s World Travel Trends report, commissioned by ITB Berlin, found 75% of Asians preferred holidaying closer to home, but the next most popular destinations were Europe and North America (15% and 9% respectively) – leaving out Australia and the Pacific, South America and Africa, which did not make the cut, according to a report on ETN.

Asia is undoubtedly driving international tourism globally with outbound trips increasing 53% from 2009 to 2013 marking an average growth rate of 22%, and despite the findings on preferred destinations, it comes in stark contrast to record arrivals from Chinese nationals to Australia as released by new data acquired by the peak tourism body yesterday.

According to the World Travel Trends report, the first eight months of this year showed outbound trips from Asia increased 8%, double that of the global growth rate and shows no sign of slowing down, with tourism consultancy IPK International predicting in 2015, Asian citizens will take an above-average number of trips and will overtake other nations in the outbound market, ETN reports.

The report also reiterated global sentiment that international business travel was in decline, with leisure travel overtaking most arrivals from Asia, including Australia.

Meanwhile, the report on ETN states the type of holidays being taken has changed, with city breaks and beach holidays on the rise.

Online bookings continued to increase in popularity for Asian travellers, but 40% choose to use travel agents for personal advice.
