The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority is working to change the perception of the country for Australian travellers, in an effort to increase visitation to the Pacific nation.

A group of Australian specialty travel agents have arrived in the Land of “a Million Different Journeys” for the 2014 Lukim Expo.

The PNG Lukim Expo is an annual event for Papua New Guinea Tourism Industry which brings together members, stakeholders, local operators, resorts and travel agents in Papua New Guinea.

During the PNG Lukim Expo, participants will be able to meet through productive B2B sessions.

Ahead of the expo, PNG Tourism Promotion Authority organized a Familiarization trip where the agents enjoyed a vast array of tourism opportunities on offer to travellers, showcasing the range that is “the PNG Experience”. The itinerary included a stay out at Tawali Resort in Milne Bay Province.

Niugini Holidays director Ruth Dicker, who is based in Sydney, told Travel Today those people travelling to Papua New Guinea are generally well travelled and looking for something that is not mass volume tourism.

“Visitors have a special interest, whether it be for the culture, bird watching, surfing, diving or war history,” Dicker added.

Dicker said bookings have remained static over the past 12 months however the focus is on promoting the county’s close proximity to outstanding cultural and geographic offerings.

The PNG Lukim Expo runs from 6 to 13 September.
