Midweek Interview with Paul Cutler, Sales & Marketing Manager, Nanuku Resort & Spa, Fiji

The challenge for the industry is… Blurred lines. As an hotelier we sit at one end of the food chain and the buying public at the other. We have agents, wholesalers, wholesale agents, online travel agents and everything in between as well as our own web based tools. We need all channels to feed business to a destination to somewhere like Fiji, but the distribution lines get murkier every year.

The things I like about my job are… The pace. Opening a new hotel is never, ever relaxed. The past two months have flown by.

And the frustrations… Getting a new hotel concept across for an established destination like Fiji. We are getting there, but who’d have heard of a Bali villa-style family hotel in Fiji.

If I didn’t work in travel I would be a… I would have turn back around and get a job back in travel. I couldn’t do anything else.

Qantas or Virgin? Such a tough one. On my route to Fiji and back Virgin are great, but QF has a code-share with FJ and the new planes and service are just outstanding.

My proudest moment was… My youngest son, who has Asperger’s, came home from kindy last week feeling like he fits in.

The naughtiest thing I ever did was… Parachute nude into the royal wedding (there is no way you’re getting the truth!).

I try to relax by… Surfing or swimming every day.

The last time I feared for my life… Surfing with a shark on Sunday.

If I can, I always try to avoid… McDonalds.

I really wish I had… The guitar skills of Jimi Hendrix, the bank balance of the Packers and the available time of a retiree. I buy my sons good guitars and spend all of my time teaching them to play.

The best advice I’ve ever received was… “Rule No 1, Cutler. Always make your boss look good”.

I don’t understand why… People eat McDonalds.

My greatest weakness is… Beer or chocolate.

And my greatest strength… My open, easy going approach.

If I was prime minister I would… Acknowledge climate change.

If I won $1 million on the lottery I would… Retire and work on those guitar skills.

If I could be someone else for one day I would be… Richard Branson

I’ve always wanted to travel to… Tasmania, just haven’t got there yet.

My favourite holiday was… Family holiday in Fiji with a surf thrown in every day.
