Australia has been confirmed as the second fastest developing cruise market in the world, growing more than 130% in the past five years according to the latest State of the Cruise Industry report.

The annual Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) report showed that Australia is the fifth top ranking global cruise market with a 3.6% market share. In addition, Australasia was shown to be among the top four cruise destinations in terms of ship deployments. Australia and New Zealand accounted for 6% of all global itineraries after the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

CLIA Australasia general manager Brett Jardine said the latest figures underlined Australia’s important position on the world cruise scene.

“Cruising just keeps going from strength to strength Down Under and we look forward to another big year ahead,” he said.

Meanwhile, Carnival Australia chief executive said the report indicated the “dynamic nature” of cruising in the region.

“Such phenomenal growth in this market has given Australian and New Zealand travellers access to exceptional choice in terms of cruise lines, ships itineraries and onboard features,” she said.

“Cruising here has something to offer every market segment with locally or seasonally based ships plus international ships visiting during the height of the summer cruise season.”

Scandinavia and Finland emerged as the only market growing at a faster rate than Australia, climbing 184.6% over the past five years, although with a smaller market share of 1.6% in 2013.

The mature US market remains number one with a 55% share and growth of 15.1% over the five-year period.

The statistics demonstrated the impressive growth of the industry overall, with 21.3 million passengers cruising on CLIA’s 63 member lines in 2013, with the organization forecasting that number to rise to 21.7 million in 2014.

CLIA cruise lines will introduce 24 new ships in 2014-15, with combined passenger capacity of 37,546, to cater to the growing demand. In 2014, the association consists of 410 ships – up from 393 last year.
