Etihad issues warning ahead of Sabre switch

Etihad Airways has warned passengers of possible disruptions between February 22 and 25 as it transitions to new passenger sales, website and check-in systems.

Part of its US$1 billion 10-year deal with Sabre Airline Solutions, the "Big Switch" will integrate the airline's existing passenger service system (PSS) into one platform which utilises "cutting-edge" software across reservations, inventory, eCommerce, distribution and departure control activities.

All booking channels will be down from 11pm UAE time on February 22 (6am AEST on Saturday February 23) to resume during the course of Sunday February 24.

Chief commercial officer Peter Baumgartner was confident the new system would offer a "wealth of new benefits" to the airline and its customers.

"The Big Switch to the new passenger services system however is a significant operation, involving thousands of members of Etihad Airways staff around the world, and therefore we strongly advise our customers to follow the guidelines which will help reduce any potential disruptions to their travel plans," he said.

Passengers with plans to travel over the transition period are advised to arrive at the airport four hours before their flight is due to depart, and to check in online and print their own boarding pass from 24 hours before departure where possible. Those unable to check in online should ensure they take a copy of their email confirmation or travel itinerary with them.

Meanwhile, guests wishing to purchase an upgrade should do so before February 21, with any changes to travel plans to be made before February 22.

Customer contact centres will be operational, but agents will be unable to take bookings, make changes or cancellations, or process upgrades.

Etihad described it as the "most challenging IT and business-critical initiative that the Abu Dhabi-based airline has implemented in its history" with 6700 Etihad and third-party staff having undergone intensive training.
