Thousands of passengers were evacuated from Frankfurt International Airport over the weekend after a series of events unfolded beginning with a man allegedly shouting “Allahu Akbar”.
Frankfurt Police said a 38-year-old Slovenian man was approached by police at 5:16pm local time on Saturday because he was not wearing a mask. He reportedly responded in an aggressive manner before shouting, “I will kill you all. Allahu Akbar”.
The man, who was known to police, tried to flee, but was overwhelmed by emergency services under threat of a firearm. He left his luggage behind when he tried to escape, which lead to the evacuation of departure hall B.
The luggage was later found to be harmless; however, at the same time, police reported that an armed man had been sighted in Terminal 1, which was assumed to be connected with the Slovenian man.
Terminal 1 was evacuated, flights were stopped and the train station at the airport was closed.
An investigation ensued involving 100 federal and state police officers as well as customs officers on duty at the time.
Police gave the all-clear around 8pm local time and are now investigating the two men for suspected threats and resistance to law enforcement officials.
