“The Terminator” to leave old Malaysian Airlines behind

He’s the new ceo at the helm of a “technically bankrupt” airline, but has big plans, including a rebranding, to turn things around.

Notorious for slashing jobs when at the helm of other airlines earning him the title “The Terminator”, Malaysian Airlines newly appointed ceo, Christoph Mueller expects the carrier to become an “entirely new company”.

Per reports by the BBC, Mueller said the transition would be an orderly process, following the announcement of a restructuring plan last month which includes 6000 job cuts.

Mueller said the airline was “technically bankrupt” but no further bad news “particularly for our new employees” should be expected in the near future.

Instead, Mueller told the BBC the airline would focus on improving technology, renegotiating contracts with its suppliers and generally becoming more efficient to cut costs further.

Malaysia Airlines plans to announce details of its rebranding on September 1, but travellers holding frequent flyer miles and the new company would honour any tickets sold by the “old” MAS.

While Mueller told BCC it would be “difficult to predict” how quickly the brand would recover from MH370 and MH17 disasters in 2014, and refused to say whether the rebrand would include a name change for the airline, adding that all options were open.

Mueller said a new schedule for the carriers’ operations would be announced in “a couple of weeks time”, but did not stipulate if it would include withdrawing from some costly long-haul services.
