Two South Korean citizens have been arrested after allegedly attempting to sneak approximately 252,000 live eels out of Croatia, according to the country’s police.

The Associated Press reported that the pair, aged 38 and 47, were halted at Zagreb’s international airport this week after their suitcases were found to be packed with the wriggly creatures, which were estimated to have a market value of $286,000.

Both face charges of “destroying protected natural goods”, Croatian authorities said, and they could be served a jail sentence if convicted.

Eel is a popular feature in Asian cuisine, but doesn’t usually come cheap.
