The first humpback whales of the season have arrived in the Whitsundays as guests on SeaLink’s new vessel Osprey spotted a mother whale and calf in North Mackerel Bay last week.

The sighting, around lunchtime on the northside of Hook Island, has set an exciting tone for the upcoming tour season.

“Witnessing these magnificent creatures up close on Osprey’s maiden voyage was truly special and really showcases the unique and awe-inspiring experiences our guests can look forward to on our tours,” SeaLink Whitsundays GM Asher Telford said.

“It’s moments like these that remind us of the true magic of living in the Whitsundays.”

Spotting the first whale of the season gives operators bragging rights for the year and SeaLink has been on top of the game in recent years.

“It is brilliant to be the first to spot the whales on their annual migration for the third season in a row and on Osprey’s first voyage in the region made it extra special,” Telford continued.

Last week’s sighting marks the second earliest whale appearance since ‘Eye on the Reef’ began recording in 2007. Eye on the Reef is supported by the Reef Joint Field Management Program, a partnership between the Reef Authority and the Department of Environment and Science through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

“We are proud that the Whitsundays is globally recognised as a Whale Heritage Site,” Whales of the Whitsundays president Olivia Broadhurst said. “The Whitsundays serves as a crucial nursery for humpback whales, inspiring us all to continue our efforts in environmental preservation.”

Whale season in the Whitsundays generally runs from June to early October with a number of tour operators offering a mix of both private and group charter options.
