Bonza CEO spends eight hours on train to meetings with Sydney Airport due to cost of domestic airfares

Bonza CEO Tim Jordan has continued to spearhead the campaign for cheaper domestic air travel via a public call for peak time slots at Sydney Airport on LinkedIn.

Jordan pointed out the irony that because the current cost of airfares to Sydney would see him fork out around $1,000 for a round trip, he now catches an eight-hour train to a meeting to rectify this exact situation.

The meetings, Jordan says, “can potentially bring low-cost airfares to 2 million more regionally based Australians in about 16 regional locations across the country and of course nearly 6 million residents in the Sydney basin.

Bonza currently does not hold any slots at Sydney Airport, a fact highlighted in a recent senate hearing into Australian aviation.

It was revealed that although Bonza has not formally applied for the slots, the carrier has had the necessary discussions to determine it is not viable at this stage.

“We could fly in the middle of the day,” Jordan, explained, continuing to state that for an airline looking to carry as many passengers as possible at a low cost during peak times, is not financially viable.

Jordan’s post to LinkedIn highlights the cost of a return trip from Sydney to Coffs Harbour Airport.

Qantas’ lowest quote for the flights comes in at $1,054, while passengers on REX could spend under four figures, just, at $994.

According to the CEO, when Bonza began flying to Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport, offering seven routes not offered by other carriers (like Toowoomba and Port Macquarie), travellers were seeing average savings of over $400 per trip.

“These are very real and very significant savings when communities need them most, and we can do the same in Sydney in 2024, if only we could get access to limited peak slots required for SYD aircraft basing”, the post read.
