Airbnb trials travel agent-style service

Already known for its disruptive effect on the global travel industry, online accommodation booking site Airbnb looks set to shake things up again with the trial of a new travel management service.

The new Journeys product creates comprehensive three to five day travel itineraries which include a free daily meal, curated excursions, Airbnb lodging and a ride from the airport to wherever the person is staying.

The trips are currently on offer on an invite-only basis to people who are looking to visit San Francisco in December but have yet to make arrangements. The three piloted options options include an exploration of San Francisco’s natural treasures, a foodie trip and a tour of the city’s hot night spots. They are priced between US$500 and US$750.

“We’re reinventing travel—again—and we’d love you to be a part of history,” the site said in the invitation. “During the first two weeks of December, we’re piloting a new Airbnb experience: handcrafted trips. We’re extending a limited number of invitations to friends of friends and travelers who are excited to explore the city of San Francisco in an entirely new way – with the locals who live here.”

The site previously trialled an in-app concierge service, but it was never rolled out. Watch this space.
