Air New Zealand targets pets and overweight luggage in latest price hikes
Edited by Travel Weekly

Air New Zealand has quietly doubled its fees for overweight luggage and bumped domestic pet carriage rates citing high-cost environments.

Pre-paid domestic baggage now costs are up $10 to $45, excess baggage fees are up $15 to $60 while overweight bag fees have doubled to $40.

Short-haul pre-paid bags have risen from $70 to $90, excess baggage fees are up $15 to $60 and overweight bag fees have doubled to $80.

Long-haul pre-paid bags are $40 more at $160, excess fees have increased from $150 to $195, and overweight bags have doubled.

“Like many Kiwis and businesses, we are experiencing a high-cost environment, which means we’re having to adjust pricing across several areas,” AIR NZ chief customer and sales officer Leanne Geraghty said.

“We always recommend adding extra bags at the time of booking, or before travel, to avoid any excess baggage or overweight baggage fees.

“For excess and overweight baggage, customers pay one flat fee regardless of the size or weight of the item.”

The cost of bringing your furry friend along for the ride used to be $75 for pets up to 25k and $100 for pets over 25kg.

The new blanket price for all pets is $120.

The price hikes follow a number of other cost increases across New Zealand’s national carrier including domestic airfares which rose 7.4 per cent in February according to ‘Stats NZ’.
