Travellers are increasingly thinking of holidays as an "essential" regardless of the state of their bank balances, according to a new survey.

In a poll of 1,000 travellers, travel search site Skyscanner found nearly three quarters intend to take more than one holiday in the next year, and 42% will go away at least three times.

Money issues took the back burner, with 58% declaring they would find a way to get away, regardless of their financial situation. Almost 40% accepted they would spend more while on holiday this year.

"Holidays are a vital part of the lives of Aussies and Kiwis these days whether they're getting away on short breaks or long-stay sojourns overseas," Dave Boyte, market development manager Australia and New Zealand, said.

"Whatever it is, now they're locking it in to their yearly budget, saving all they can and jet-setting whenever possible."

Last year saw the majority of respondents carefully save for their trip, with eight out of 10 people this year paying for their last holiday with savings, and 20% started putting money aside for their next trip upon their return from holiday. But 59% admitted to overspending their holiday budget while "in resort".
