Germany a hit with Europe-bound Aussies

Australian visitors to Germany shot up 10% in 2012, with the German National Tourist Board recording 701,601 Aussie overnight stays during the year.

Citybreaks in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Berlin and Frankfurt emerged as the most popular holidays choices for Australians.

The largest spike in Aussie visitation was seen in December, when numbers soared 22.6%. But June, July and September were also popular months for travel.

The Australian growth rate exceeded the overall 8% rise in international visitors which saw 68.8 million overnight stays in Germany.

"According to a recent study by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the rise in inbound travel to Germany again far exceeded the growth at global and European level in 2012," GNTB chief executive, Petra Hedorfer, said.
