Traffic climbs again in April
By admin

Scheduled international passenger traffic climbed 4% in April as Singapore Airlines cemented its place as the largest overseas airline operating out of Australia.

More than 2.37 million people travelled to and from Australia during the month, almost 100,000 more than April 2011, government figures have shown.

March last year was the only month since earlier 2009 to have seen a decrease in volume.

Market share figures contained in the monthly report showed Qantas as the largest carrier with 18.8%, down from 19% 12 months ago.

Singapore Airlines was a clear second, capturing 9.5% of passengers, followed by Emirates with 8.6%. Both carriers saw their share climb from April last year of 0.3 and 0.7 percentage points respectively.

Air New Zealand remained static at 8.2% while Virgin Australia saw a sharp increase in share, rising from 6.6% last year to 8.1%.

Jetstar also experienced a rise, from 7.4% to 7.8% with Cathay Pacific’s share increasing to 5.3% from 5%.

Aside from Qantas, Malaysia Airlines at 3.3% was the only airline which saw its share fall over the past year, from 4.6% to 3.8%.
