Terror, smog blamed for China tourism drop

Pollution in big cities and recent terrorist attacks are some of the factors that explain the fall in tourism in China over the past few years, the China Tourism Academy says.

The number of domestic tourists decreased by 2.51 per cent in 2013 to 129,08 million people, according to the report, cited by the China Daily.

Also, according to the World Tourism Organisation, China was the only major tourist destination in the world where the number of visitors fell in 2013 – by 3.5 per cent to 55.7 million- pushing the country down to fourth place in number of foreign visitors.

The report on domestic tourism showed 24.6 per cent of travelers, 11 percentage points more than in 2012, were dissatisfied with visits and criticised air and water quality, as well as architectural barriers for the disabled.

The Academy's manager, Dai Bin, said after the first quarter of 2012 the number of foreign tourists had decreased for nine consecutive quarters.

He added there were no indications the tendency could change in the short term and warned that the market "is in a serious situation, never seen before."

"Climate, environment and terrorism have shadowed the tourism industry," the researcher said.

Beijing is one of the most contaminated cities in the world, especially in the winter months.

The appreciation in the yuan and red tape to obtain a visa could be other factors, leading the government to seek new ways to attract foreign visitors, such as issuing visas for less than three-day stays.
