Qantas hikes east coast capacity

Qantas will further rejig its domestic network, progressively adding up to 25,800 seats per week on its east coast routes over the next 12 months.

The airline will add 11 weekly return services between Sydney and Melbourne from July 9, and 11 between Sydney and Brisbane from August 23.

Meanwhile, Jetstar will add 21 weekly return services between Sydney and Melbourne from August 16 and seven services between Sydney and Adelaide from November 15.

Both its Sydney to Ballina-Byron and Sydney to the Gold Coast routes will receive seven additional frequencies from April 18. A further three return services will be added between Adelaide and the Gold Coast, and four between Newcastle and the Gold Coast, also from April 18.

“The additional flexibility reflects the Qantas Group’s commitment to ensure our customers have the greatest choice, flexibility and product offering across a strong domestic network,” chief executive Alan Joyce said.

The increased capacity comes a day after the airline scaled back its Northern Territory operations.
