Qantas to fly A380 to Dallas Fort Worth

The deployment of an Airbus A380 between Sydney and Dallas Fort Worth from September will see Qantas boost weekly capacity on the route by more than 10%.

The superjumbo will replace the Boeing 747 that currently operates the route, with its larger size prompting the airline to reduce frequency on the route from daily to six times weekly. The Tuesday service will be axed.

The move represents part of the Qantas Transformation Program unveiled in February which aims to reduce the amount of time its international and domestic fleets remain on the ground, according to chief executive Alan Joyce.

By retiming services between Melbourne and Dubai, the airline has unlocked more A380 flying time which can be used on the DFW route, he revealed.

“Dallas has become an important gateway for Qantas customers since we started flying there in 2011,” Joyce said.

“When you combine the A380 with the onward connections available from Dallas, this is a great example of the right aircraft on the right route.”

The aircraft’s additional range means that the return service can operate direct to Sydney rather than via Brisbane.

The shift will also mean changes to the mix of A380s and B747s on its Sydney-Hong Kong route.

Meanwhile, the Tourism and Transport Forum predicted the upgrade would boost the visitor economy by making it easier for Americans to visit the NSW capital.

“This is great news for Sydney because Americans can now fly non-stop direct to Sydney from Dallas-Fort Worth on the world’s largest passenger aircraft,” chief executive Ken Morrison said.

“The direct flights will reduce travel time for Sydney-bound passengers, while replacing Boeing 747s with quieter and more comfortable A380s will improve the passenger experience.”
