Qantas ‚Äúfree from union control”

Qantas has welcomed a decision by Fair Work Australia which it said will allow it to run the airline “free from union control”.

In a statement issued early this afternoon, Qantas said the Transport Workers Union (TWU) used the bargaining process for a new enterprise agreement to dictate how Qantas should be run.

“It’s clear that the TWU demands were out of step with what is fair and reasonable for a union to demand of an employer,” group executive government and corporate affairs Olivia Wirth said. “Importantly, Qantas is free to run our business as we see fit and not be dictated to by union officials who do not have the airline’s best interests at heart.”

The decision also prevents the TWU from taking industrial action for at least the next two years.

Qantas said it was the first time in 20 years that it has been forced into arbitration to resolve a pay dispute.
