Princess Kate christens Royal Princess

Princess Cruises welcomed the Duchess of Cambridge, aka Princess Kate, on board its new ship Royal Princess for a suitably regal naming ceremony in Southampton yesterday.

The Duchess named the 3600-guest ship and uttered a blessing for all those who will sail on it. She then released a Nebuchadnezzar-sized bottle (that's 15 litres) of Moët & Chandon which smashed against the ship's hull as 2000 guests looked on.

The role of ships's godmother has also been bestowed upon Kate, who is due to become a mother in mid-July. The naming was her last public engagement before the baby is due.

"Her Royal Highness is an inspiring ambassador for Britain – with whom Princess Cruises shares strong ties and she is admired around the world for her style and grace," Princess Cruises president and chief executive Alan Buckelew said.

"We're so honoured she accepted our invitation to become godmother to our new ship."
