News in Brief: Tuesday November 11
Today the Commonwealth of Nations member states, including Australia, mark Remembrance Day, to commemorate the end of the First World War and to remember those in the armed forces who have fought and died in the line of duty.
Hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente, with the red poppy the symbol for remembrance around the world.
A minute's silence occured at 11:11am, with a number of services held around Australia to mark the day, including at the Shrine of Remembrance Melbourne on St Kilda Rd, and various locations around the country.

World Aviation Systems (WAS) has appointed Alan Wilcock as Sales Manager for Virgin Atlantic Airways in Australia and New Zealand, effective Monday.
Alan joins Virgin Atlantic Airways from InterContinental Hotels Group, where he held the position of Corporate Business Development Manager for Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.
“I am excited to be joining Virgin Atlantic Airways managing sales in the Australian and New Zealand marketplace. It is a privilege to work for one of the leaders in the travel industry, and I look forward to working with the team to ensure Virgin Atlantic remains top of mind in the travel industry,” Wilcock said.
Gia Acitelli has remained as regional general manager at Virgin Atlantic Airways following its departure from flying into Australia earlier this year.
For 48 hours, Royal Caribbean International is offering low fares on board select 2014 Australia sailings, finishing on Thursday November 13 at 9:59am, with guests able to book cruises for as little as $58 per day for a 12-night trip.
Sailings included in the sale range from the 12-night Rhapsody of the Seas trip to the 11-night Voyager of the Seas cruise, with fares applicable to specific departure dates.

Hawaiian Airlines is introducing a new aircraft type and new schedule to its Brisbane operating in December as part of the carrier’s focus on expanding its Brisbane gateway for travel to Hawaii and mainland USA.
This year, the airline has announced increased direct flights to Honolulu to four per week and an upgrade in aircraft type to a 294-seat A330 as of December 5, and with this new revised Brisbane-Honolulu schedule to improve connection times for onward flights to mainland US destinations.
Welcome Aboard has announced that as of today, the Christchurch Trams will again be running their original loop through the city, a year after the earthquakes affected the tram operations.
Post-earthquakes, the trams worked on a shortened route, however will now return to the 10-stop route of around 25 minutes, down Worcester Boulevard and along Rolleston Avenue, Armagh and New Regents Streets, before passing through Cathedral Junction back to Cathedral Square.
Royal Caribbean International’s newest cruise ship Quantum of the Seas has arrived in her homeport of Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, NJ, bringing with her a range of new features and amenities including speedy wireless connectivity, robotic bartenders, skydiving simulators and celebrity chef partnerships.
The official naming ceremony for Quantum of the Seas will take place on Friday November 14 during the pre-inaugural celebration hosted by the ship’s godmother, Kristin Chenoweth.
From January 1 to October 7 2015, passengers booking Virgin Australia flights are eligible to receive up to $40 off on their first Uber ride, with flights booked by November 14 2014.
The offer can be used anytime between receiving the promo code and October 7 2015, and is applicable to new Uber riders, while current Uber riders can share the code with someone who has not yet signed up.
Tigerair’s two day 4800-seat sale is returning with late summer travel deals available from the end of January to the end of March, and starting at $48 each way.
Select routes on offer include east coast routes between Adelaide and Brisbane or Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns or Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Mackay or Sydney, and between Sydney and Whitsunday Coast.
