The long-awaited direct air connection between Australia and India could be further hindered by the grounding of Boeing 787 aircraft, Air India has reportedly admitted.

The carrier was expected to launch direct flights between New Delhi and both Melbourne and Sydney in the coming months using Dreamliners.

But the grounding of the aircraft earlier this month, following a global advisory by the Federal Aviation Authority in the wake of a series of reported malfunctions, has raised question marks over whether or not it will go ahead.

"Since they (Dreamliners) are grounded, we will not be able to tell if there will be any replacement. Clear picture will emerge only after February 17," an Air India spokesperson told the Times of India.
