Georgia has become the latest US state to ramp up its focus on Australia as senior tourism officials look to build on strong visitor growth since Qantas launched flights to Texas.

Arrivals climbed 27% in 2011 – the latest available figures – with the state expecting another solid set of results for 2012. Passenger numbers were not available.

The launch of Qantas services to Dallas Fort Worth has been responsible for increasing arrivals across the southern states of the US, with Georgia among those to benefit.

Georgia Tourism deputy commissioner Kevin Langston and Visit Savannah director of tour and travel sales Mindy Shea spent last week holding product talks with tour operators and wholesalers in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in the early part of a drive to target Australia.

Agent training will also be stepped up.

In addition, Georgia will be part of a US sales mission to Australia next June when Travel South, the marketing organisation which promotes 11 southern US states, meet with agents, operators and media.

It will be the first time Travel South has ventured to Australia with the event likely to be a mini version of the Visit USA expos in February.

“The Qantas flights have opened up the south east states of the USA,” Langston told Travel Today. “We want to build on that.”

Wholesalers reacted positively to the addition of more Georgia product, he said, with many companies looking to attract repeat visitors to the US who have already ticked off California, New York and Hawaii.

“We offer a more unique, in-depth product,” Langston said.

While music is among the strong appeals of the south, the state has range of products to attract a variety of market segments, including families and honeymooners, he added.

Australia is the third largest international market for the coastal Savannah region and the eight largest for the state overall.
