Training delays possible after fire breaks out at multi-million dollar Air New Zealand flight simulation facility

Pilot’s in need of training may be facing delays following a fire at Air New Zealand’s Flight Simulation Centre at Auckland Airport last night.

The airline’s chief operational integrity and safety officer, Captain David Morgan confirmed the incident to Travel Weekly.

“At around 11.00pm last night, a small fire broke out in the northern end of the Air New Zealand Flight Simulation Centre.

“The building was safely evacuated, before Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) attended the scene.

“We will be assessing any damage to our building and simulator equipment over the next day or two,” he said.

“We are still assessing any potential impact on pilot training.”

The centre has simulators for Airbus A320s, ATR72-500s, ATR72-600s, and Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

The Dreamliner simulator alone is reported to be worth NZ$10 million.

The world-class facility is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Air New Zealand provides dry sim hire to a selection of partner airlines.

Laura Platts from Auckland International Airport said the location was further enough away from the terminal that any disruption was isolated to that area.

“The site was away from the terminals and there was no impact to airfield operations,” she said.
