Federal Aviation Administration warn “continued vigilance” is needed
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a safety alert to airlines and pilots about the “need for continued vigilance and attention to mitigation of safety risks.”
The warning comes after a number of high profile near collisions, six serious, since January that sparked the FAA to convene a safety summit last week.
“While the overall numbers do not reflect an increase in incidents and occurrences, the potential severity of these events is concerning,” the FAA said.
In early January, an American Airlines flight crossed in front of the path of a Delta Airlines’ Boeing 737 causing it to hit the brakes and cancel take off.
“Operators should evaluate information collected through their safety management processes, identify hazards, increase and improve safety communications with employees and enact mitigations,” the alert said.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating a near collision between a FedEx and Southwest Airlines plane in Austin Texas where the jets came within 100 feet of each other.
“There have been far to many close calls,” chair, NTSB, Jennifer Homendy, said.
“These recent incidents must serve as a wake up call!”
The last major crash in the United States was in February of 2009 when Colgan Air flight 3407 crashed in Buffalo, causing 49 fatalities.
